President, provost offer office hours for students

Harvard President Neil L. Rudenstine will hold office hours for students in his Massachusetts Hall office from 4 to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 7. Provost Harvey V. Fineberg will hold office hours for students in his Massachusetts Hall office from 4 to 5 p.m. tomorrow, Nov. 3.

Office hours are held on a first-come, first-served basis.

Taiwanese students gather

The Boston Intercollegiate Taiwanese Students Association (BITSA) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) Association of Taiwanese Students, will hold it’s third annual BITSA Conference at M.I.T. on Saturday, Nov. 11, starting at 10 a.m.

Registration is from 8 to 10 a.m., in the foyer of Building E-51 on the day of the conference.

Established in 1997 by students from Harvard, M.I.T., and Tufts University, BITSA was created as a means of communication for Taiwanese and Taiwanese-American students. The annual BITSA conference aims to educate students about Taiwanese and Taiwanese-American history, culture, and society.

The daylong conference will explore issues particular to the Taiwanese-American community. This year’s keynote speaker is Leon T. Ku, financial director and corporate treasurer of WaferTech.

The conference also includes workshops and panels. Speakers will discuss topics ranging from the technology boom, careers, and Asians in the media, among others. In addition, the conference will feature a comedy performance by Eliot Chang and a dance party. To register and for more information visit the Web site at www.bitsa.org.

Ian Hacking delivers lecture

The Center for Ethics and the Professions at the University is sponsoring a lecture by Ian Hacking titled “Sympathy as a Way of Extending Values and Concerns,” at Starr Auditorium on Thursday, Nov. 16, at 4:30 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.

Hacking is a professor at the Institute for History and Philosophy of Science and Technology at the University of Toronto. For more information call (617) 495-1336.

Grazda to exhibit work, speak

Photographer Edward Grazda’s work from his forthcoming book, “Afghanistan Diary 1992-2000,” will be on display at the lower level of the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts during the month of November. Grazda will speak at the Mongan Center, Fogg Art Museum, on Nov. 16, at 11:30 a.m. For more information, call Suzanne Greenberg, assistant curator of the photography collection at the Carpenter Center, at (617) 495-5400.
