President, provost offer office hoursHarvard President Neil L. Rudenstine will hold office hours for students in his Massachusetts Hall office from 4 to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3. Provost Harvey V. Fineberg will hold office hours for students in his Massachusetts Hall office from 4 to 5 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 16. Office hours are held on a first-come, first-served basis.

Applications for research funds available

The bequest of William F. Milton makes research funds available to Harvard faculty members. The Milton Fund supports studies of a medical, geographical, historical, or scientific nature, which must be either in the interests of promoting the physical and material welfare of the human race, or of investigating and determining the value and importance of a discovery or invention.

Applicants must be members of the University with voting privileges in their respective faculties and must not have received Milton Fund support during the past five years. Preference is given to new and original projects, especially independent work of recently appointed young faculty members.A formal application form is required and is available from Sponsored Programs Administration. The award amount is $24,000 for the period Jan. 1, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2001. The application deadline is Oct. 15.

Hauser’s open house for grad students

All Harvard graduate students are invited to the Hauser Center’s Doctoral Fellowship Open House from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 3, at the Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations at the Kennedy School of Government. Refreshments will be served.

The event is being organized to raise awareness of a generous funding opportunity available to all graduate students at Harvard. The Hauser Center will award up to five two-year residential fellowships per year to doctoral/advanced degree candidates who are enrolled in any program at Harvard and who are engaged in major research or writing a dissertation on a nonprofit sector topic.

The Hauser Center for Nonprofit Organizations is a University-wide, interdisciplinary research center that seeks to expand understanding and accelerate critical thinking about civil society among scholars, practitioners, policy-makers, and the general public by encouraging scholarship, developing curriculum, fostering mutual learning between academics and practitioners, and shaping policies that enhance the sector and its role in society. The Hauser Center is located at 5 Bennett St. in Cambridge. The entrance is in the Charles Hotel courtyard next to the Kennedy School of Government.
