Oldest U.S.-Japan student exchange program hosts forum

The annual Japan-American Student Conference (JASC) is being held for the 52nd time in the organization’s 66-year history; it began July 21 and will continue to Aug. 20. Entirely organized and managed by and for university students, JASC meetings alternate yearly between the United States and Japan, and provide opportunities for intensive exchange on issues of concern to both nations as well as extensive travel in and around the conference venues.

The theme of the 2000 program is “Developing New Approaches to Promote Social Change.” After its opening in Tokai University at Hawaii, the conference has moved to various mainland locales, including Harvard University, where it will conclude on Aug. 19th with a daylong forum in Lowell Lecture Hall, 17 Kirkland St., Cambridge. The forum is open to the public.

Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies offered

Through readings, films, and classroom exercises, students learn to read more purposively, selectively, and with greater speed and comprehension.This class meets for one hour a day over a period of a few weeks. Cost: $150. The fall sessions will be held Oct. 2-Oct. 20, Monday-Friday, 8-9 a.m. and Oct. 16-Nov. 15, Monday, Wednesday, Friday, 4-5 p.m. To register, please contact the Bureau of Study Counsel at 5 Linden St. or call 495-2581 for more information.
