Artistic freedom conference at Law School, April 14

The Harvard Law School Arts Panel will present its spring conference on Friday, April 14, at 2:30 p.m. in Hauser 104. The event is titled “Protected Speech or Just Bad Art? Artistic Freedom and the First Amendment in the Brooklyn Museum Controversy and Beyond.”

Fred Schauer, academic dean and Frank Stanton Professor of the First Amendment at the Kennedy School of Government, will moderate a panel featuring Stephen Weil, former director of the Corcoran Gallery and emeritus senior scholar at the Smithsonian Institution’s Center for Museum Studies; Elliot Mincberg of People for the American Way; and Dr. Michael Greve, co-founder of the Center for Individual Rights, in Washington, D.C.

Human rights symposium at Law School, April 15

The Harvard University Indian Human Rights Group will present a one-day symposium, “Human Rights and the Indian Judiciary’s Constitutional Jurisprudence” on Saturday, April 15, in the Vorenberg Classroom, Harvard Law School.

Speakers and moderators will include Justice V.R. Krishna Iyer, former judge, Supreme Court of India; Soli J. Sorabjee, attorney general of India; and several experts on human rights and the law in India.

The program is co-sponsored by the Human Rights Program, Harvard Law School Graduate Program, Satyam Computer Services Ltd., and the Harvard University Committee on the Environment. Setchkarev Memorial Prize established

Faculty and students of Slavic literature and languages at several local colleges and universities, including Harvard, have establ ished the Setchkarev Memorial Prize in honor of Vsevolod Setchkarev, the Curt Hugo Reisinger Professor of Slavic Languages and Literatures, Emeritus, who died in 1998. A native of Russia, Setchkarev was an authority on Russian fiction and poetry of the 19th century.

The prize will be awarded for the best undergraduate and graduate essays on Russian literature submitted in Harvard’s Slavic Department courses during the current academic year.

Radcliffe celebrates food in literature, May 7

The Radcliffe Culinary Friends at Schlwill present its spring culinary event, “Food Reveals Character–In Literature and Life” on Sunday, May 7, from 2-4 p.m. in Askwith Lecture Hall, Longfellow Hall. A reception will follow at the Schlesinger Library at the Radcliffe Institute.

Elinor Lipman, author of The Inn at Lake Devine and The Ladies’ Man, will talk about how she uses food to help describe her characters. Food history author Betty Fussell will discuss the use of memorable food moments to mark turning points in her marriage in her book, My Kitchen Wars. Both writers will show how food, drink, and cooking can become revealing and funny ways to define contemporary life, both real and imagined.

Joint Center for Housing Studies offers research, design prizes

The Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard is offering two $100 prizes for the best graduate-level research or design projects on housing. The competition is open to all University graduate students. The deadline for submissions is Friday, May 12. Winners will be notified on May 26.
