Jane Fountain, associate professor of public policy at the Kennedy School of Government and member of the Harvard Information Infrastructure Project, has been appointed to a three-year term as a member of the Research Advisory Board of the Internet Policy Institute in Washington, D.C. Dubbed by its founders as the “Brookings Institution of the Internet,” the Internet Policy Institute is a think tank chaired by former Netscape Communications CEO Jim Barksdale and Georgia Tech President Wayne Clough. The independent, non-partisan, non-advocacy institute will provide objective analysis, research, education, and outreach on a full range of economic, social, and policy issues related to the Internet.

Putnam Receives Honorary Doctorate from Ohio State

The Ohio State University honored Robert D. Putnam, Stanfield Professor for International Peace at the Kennedy School of Government, with an honorary doctorate at its winter commencement ceremonies, held in Columbus on Friday, March 17. Putnam was honored for his contributions to society through his long career as a scholar in the study of foreign policy, political culture and historical analysis of governments and democracy.

Putnam has served as chair of Harvard’s Government Department, director of the Center for International Affairs, and dean of the Kennedy School. He is the author or co-author of several books and scholarly articles published in 10 languages. Putnam has also served on the staff of the National Security Council. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the Trilateral Commission, the Council on Foreign Relations and the International Institute of Strategic Studies. He occasionally serves as a consultant to the U.S. Department of State, the Central Intelligence Agency, and the World Bank.

Rivlin Will Give Keynote at GSAS Alumni Day April 15

The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) has announced that Alice Rivlin ’58, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, will give the keynote address at the GSAS Alumni Day 2000, to be held Saturday, April 15, in Sever Hall and the Faculty Club. Rivlin, a 1992 GSAS Centennial Medalist, will give the address “Who Benefits From the ‘New’ Economy?” at 10:15 a.m. in Sever Hall.

Other Alumni Day events include symposia on music, medical sciences, history, economics, libraries and mathematics. A continental breakfast, luncheon, and reception are also planned.
