Rev. Gomes Delivers Sermon at University of Cambridge

The Reverend Professor Peter J. Gomes delivered one of six formal “University Sermons” in the Church of St. Mary the Great at the University of Cambridge, England, on Sunday, Feb. 6.

Gomes delivered the sermon, “An Act of Defiance and the Yearning for Something More,” in his role as Select Preacher Before the University of Cambridge. He was chosen for the sermon through a tradition extending back to the 14th century

Persson is New Radcliffe Public Policy Fellow

Inga Persson, professor and special chair of economics and gender at Sweden’s Lund University, recently joined the Radcliffe Public Policy Institute’s fellowship program. Persson, who is Sweden’s only female full professor of economics, will work on two projects focused on labor economics and women in Sweden. She will give a free seminar on her findings on Wednesday, March 22, at the Radcliffe Public Policy Center, 69 Brattle Street. For more information, call 496-3478.

Crimson Cash Program Wins Award

Harvard University Dining Services has received the National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU) Effective Practices Award for its innovative use of the World Wide Web in its Crimson Cash program.

Jeffrey B. Cuppett, manager of Card Technology Services, developed a system last year, that allows Crimson Cash card users to add monetary value to their cards via the Internet, an enhancement over the more traditional Value Transfer Station (VTS), resembling an automatic teller machine, which accepts cash.

The new Web VTS system lets users add value to their Crimson Cash cards 24 hours a day.

“Students were looking for a more convenient way to add value to their Crimson Cash accounts,” said Ted A. Mayer, director of Dining Services. “The system has become such a part of their daily routine that they needed more access and flexibility.”

Since the Web VTS went online, Cuppett says the Crimson Cash business has grown more “than 400 percent” with the same size administrative staff.
